Here are 5 steps to take to get rid of bed bugs from your car.
1. Inspect Your Car Thoroughly
Before you start treating your car, the first step is to inspect it carefully. Bed bugs are small, flat insects that like to hide in cracks and crevices. Use a flashlight to check for signs of bed bugs.

The signs of bed bugs include:
- Live bugs (about the size of an apple seed)
- Bed bug shells or skins, which they shed as they grow
- Tiny dark spots, which are bed bug fecal stains
- Small white eggs, often in hidden areas
Common hiding places in your car include the seams and folds of the seats, between seat cushions, the floor mats, and even inside the glove compartment or beneath seat covers. Take your time to thoroughly search all these areas.
2. Vacuum Every Inch of Your Car
Once you've inspected your vehicle, the next step is to vacuum thoroughly. Vacuuming helps remove bed bugs, eggs, and any debris that might serve as hiding spots.

To ensure a deep clean:
- Use a vacuum cleaner with a hose and crevice attachment to get into tight spaces.
- Vacuum the seats, including underneath and between the cushions.
- Pay special attention to seams and edges where bed bugs might be hiding.
- Vacuum the floor mats, carpets, trunk, and any other accessible parts of the car’s interior.
- If you have seat covers or removable floor mats, take them out, vacuum them, and wash them if possible.
After vacuuming, immediately dispose of the vacuum bag or contents in a sealed plastic bag and throw it away outside your home to prevent bed bugs from spreading.
3. Steam Clean the Upholstery and Carpets
Bed bugs are very sensitive to heat, and steam cleaning is one of the most effective ways to kill them. The temperature required to kill bed bugs and their eggs is around 120°F (49°C), and a steam cleaner can easily achieve this.

Here’s how to use steam cleaning to tackle bed bugs in your car:
- Rent or buy a steam cleaner with a high enough temperature setting.
- Slowly pass the steamer over the car seats, floor mats, carpets, and other fabric surfaces.
- Focus on seams, folds, and other areas where bed bugs could be hiding.
- Be sure to steam clean the trunk and any fabric that might have come into contact with bed bugs, such as seat covers or blankets.
The heat from the steam will kill bed bugs and their eggs on contact. However, make sure to allow your car to dry out properly afterward, as excess moisture can lead to mold and mildew.
