Hi, my name is Jeremy Mwangelwa, and let me tell you, we used to have a terrible, and I mean a *terrible*, bed bug infestation right here in this very bed. It was overwhelming. But I’m happy to report that today, we’ve been completely bed bug-free for at least two years now. And my goal, my mission, is to help you achieve the same thing—complete elimination of bed bugs from your home so you can sleep in peace again, without worrying about waking up to bites or dealing with the mental stress that comes with an infestation.
So, let’s dive into it. The very first secret to getting rid of bed bugs in your home is to stop them from biting you. Yes, that’s right—stop them from biting you. You see, bed bugs aren’t in your house because you’re dirty or because you left food lying around. Bed bugs don’t care about your cleanliness; they are there because *you* are their food. You are their food source. They feed on your blood, so if you can stop the bed bugs from biting you, you can prevent them from feeding. And here’s the key: when bed bugs don’t feed, they can’t breed. When they can’t breed, they can’t multiply and spread. So, the first and most important thing you need to do to start eliminating bed bugs is to stop them from biting you.
Some other tips that will help prevent bed bugs from biting you include washing your bed linens regularly in hot water—around 60°C or 140°F—because bed bugs absolutely cannot tolerate heat. They die in the heat. Both the adult bed bugs and the baby bed bugs, or nymphs, will die when exposed to high temperatures. Another crucial thing you can do is to vacuum your bed and the surrounding areas regularly. Make sure you use a good vacuum with a HEPA filter so that you can trap any tiny particles, including bed bug eggs.
But now I’m going to share with you my best secret—my *absolute best secret*—for making sure bed bugs stop biting you. And that leads us to secret number two. Secret number two is that you need to get yourself a bed bug-proof mattress cover or encasement. Now, what is a bed bug-proof mattress cover, you ask? It’s a special fabric cover with a zipper that goes all the way around your mattress. Whatever size mattress you have—ours is a queen-size mattress—you can find a bed bug-proof mattress cover to fit it. The cover does two critical things: if there are any bed bugs hiding inside your mattress (which is very likely), it will prevent those bed bugs from coming out and biting you. At the same time, it also prevents any new bed bugs that might crawl onto your mattress from getting inside the cover. The reason this is so important is that stopping bed bugs from biting you is the number one thing you must do. Once you do that, you will finally experience relief.
I can tell you, struggling with bed bugs is a psychological nightmare. We’ve been there before. It’s absolutely terrible. You feel embarrassed, you feel stressed, and worst of all, you can’t sleep well at night. But when you have a bed bug-proof mattress cover, it keeps the bed bugs trapped inside, and you’ll finally have some psychological peace of mind. When they stop biting you, you stop waking up with those itchy, red bumps on your skin, whether it’s on your hands, your arms, or your legs. And that psychological relief will give you more strength in the battle against bed bugs. It’s a huge win.
Now, let’s move on to secret number three. Did you know that bed bugs can live a very long time without feeding? It’s true—bed bugs can survive up to 400 days without a meal. That’s more than a year! So, secret number three is that you need to leave that bed bug-proof mattress cover on for at least 400 days. Yes, you heard that right—400 days. Why? Because bed bugs can go into a kind of dormant state where they’re not moving, but they’re not dead either. We’ve had our mattress cover on for over a year to make absolutely sure that any bed bugs inside are completely dead. You need to eliminate not just the adult bed bugs, but also the baby bed bugs (nymphs) and even the eggs. Bed bugs go through different life stages, and you need to kill them all. The bed bugs you’re seeing right now in your home are just part of the problem. You need to get rid of the entire bed bug life cycle.
When you put on a bed bug-proof mattress cover, make sure it’s a high-quality, bed bug-proof one. There are a lot of covers out there that claim to be bed bug-proof, but they’re not. If the cover isn’t truly bed bug-proof, the bed bugs will just keep coming out and biting you. So, read the reviews carefully, do your research, and make sure it’s genuinely bed bug-proof. And that takes us to secret number four. Secret number four is that you need to know how bad your infestation is. If you’re seeing bed bugs every day or getting bitten every night, then your infestation is severe. But if you’ve only seen one bed bug and haven’t seen another in a few weeks, it may not be as bad. However, my policy is this: if you see one bed bug, assume there are at least 100 more. I always go into full-on war mode at the sight of even one bed bug. And ever since we eliminated the bed bugs, we haven’t seen a single one.
To monitor and manage your infestation, you’ll need bed bug traps. Bed bug traps prevent bed bugs from crawling up from the floor and onto your bed. Bed bugs love to climb the legs of your bed to get to you, but if you have bed bug traps, they’ll get stuck before they can reach you. Make sure you place bed bug traps around the legs of *every single bed* in your home. These traps will stop bed bugs from reaching you, and at the same time, they’ll give you a good idea of how bad your infestation is. If you’re finding bed bugs in the traps every day, you know your infestation is severe and you need to do more. But if you’re only seeing a couple of bugs per week, it means your efforts are working.
Now, on to secret number five. You need to minimize clutter around your bed, especially underneath it. We found bed bugs hiding in luggage stored under our bed. Bed bugs love to hide in dark, quiet places, so the less clutter you have, the fewer places they have to hide. This doesn’t mean you should ignore the clutter when eliminating bed bugs, though—you still need to check everything. But once you’ve cleared out unnecessary items, it’ll be harder for bed bugs to find places to hide. They like dark, warm places, whether it’s night or day, and they’ll hide there until you’re asleep and then come out to bite you.
One last tip: make sure your bed isn’t touching the walls. Bed bugs can crawl along the walls to get to you, so keep some space between the bed and the wall. And don’t forget about your headboard—make sure there’s a bed bug trap on the legs of your headboard, too. Also, if you charge your phone next to your bed like I do, make sure the charging cable isn’t touching your bed, as bed bugs can use it to climb onto your mattress.
Remember, the number one goal is to stop bed bugs from biting you. This is the key to getting peace of mind, and it’s the first step in starving the bed bugs to death.
